"The Spaces in Between" Art Show by Joseph Goldfedder

Rising Tide, by Joseph Goldfedder
As an acupuncturist, I trace the body's invisible channels, attending to what's out of balance. My paintings live in that same territory - the space between what's seen and unseen.
Working in an abstract expressionist style, I build layered surfaces with acrylic, then scrape back into them, letting color and depth emerge through friction. Recurring forms; orbs, floating heads, atmospheric voids, function as portals: sites where physical and energetic forces converge.
I approach painting as a form of channeling. Moving intuitively, I let spirit speak through the process, opening the physical surface onto something subtler. My visual language draws from energy systems, mysticism, and chakra traditions - not as illustration, but as felt experience.
The body, for me, is a site of inner knowing, and painting is how I make that knowing visible. These works are less constructed than revealed. Marks accumulate, are obscured, and resurface - much the way healing itself works.
The paintings ask for a slower kind of looking. What emerges resembles dreamlike recollection: something familiar that resists easy naming.
Spirit Art - what happens in a session?
I hold space for the sitter while drawing and speaking to whatever arises - whether physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual. I begin by making instinctive marks, allowing the energy of the moment to move through me until I feel a natural shift. From this, a glyph emerges: an intuitive movement across the page that may hold deeper meaning for the sitter - and becomes theirs to keep.
Biography
Joseph Goldfedder is a New Jersey based artist whose work is informed by a lifelong engagement with both visual art and healing practices. He received a BFA from the University of the Arts and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University before pursuing a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from Southwest Acupuncture College.
A transformative period living in New Mexico introduced Goldfedder to acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, profoundly influencing his understanding of the relationship between the body, consciousness, and the unseen dimensions of human experience. This encounter led him to a dual career as an artist and licensed acupuncturist, with each discipline enriching and informing the other.
In addition to his work in Chinese Medicine, Goldfedder is a Certified Medical Intuitive Practitioner (CMIP®) through The Practical Path and holds a mediumship certification through The Medium School with Rory Walkom. Drawing from decades of study in art, healing, and spiritual inquiry, his practice reflects an ongoing exploration of the visible and invisible forces that shape our lives.
Goldfedder lives and works in New Jersey.
